Social Work

Social Work It was the shrill ringing of my pager that jarred me out of the deep sleep I had been enjoying. The clock beside my bed read 3:30 as I fumbled around in the dark, reaching for the insistent pager. As I saw the code that flashed on its tiny screen, my heart sank. I thought of the sleet that had been falling as I had fallen asleep a few hours before, and of the warmth of my cozy bed. The very last thing I wanted to do at that moment was to get up and go out in the cold. Unfortunately, there was little choice; I was the only Crisis Companion available during the week between Christmas and New Year. Within a few minutes, I was dressed and en route to the hospital to pick up a woman and her small children, on the run from an abusive husband, and take them to our shelter several miles out of town. As both a hotline operator and Crisis Companion for a community organization called Avalon, I had been trained to be an active listener, crisis counselor, and advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. I thought of all the training I had received, as well as the passion which had driven and encouraged my work with Avalon, as I neared the emergency room of the hospital and prepared to meet my newest clients. Every 15 seconds a woman is battered. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men will be sexually assaulted during their lifetimes. 4 women in the United States are killed every day by their husbands or male partners. When I first heard these statistics in a Women’s Studies course my Freshman year, I was astounded and thoroughly incensed. The more I read, the more committed I became to doing something which would bring about a positive change for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. It was then that I learned about and began working with Avalon, which was active on campus and in the community. Through its outreach programs, Avalon is dedicated to educating the community about the issues of sexual assault and…

Sexual Self Analysis

Professor Baldwin
Human Sexuality 255
October 14, 2014 With this first paper about self-analysis I am going to start off from the beginning when I was in elementary school. I would start the self-analysis with my development of sexual experience. When I was in second grade I had a crush on this girl named Depriece. Depriece was in the class next to mine, in this teacher named Mrs. Harcourt. Everyday day at recess we would either play tag together or play whatever sport we decided for that particular day. So what started off one day by me receiving this note from Depriece. She wrote basically do you like me yes or no. I replied back and checked the yes box and then the next day of recess, I returned back Depriece the note. That following day at recess Depriece came up to me and said “I read your note”. I said “yea what do you feel about it”. She asked me “Do you want to go out with me”. I replied yes I want to go out with you. So I remember her smiling at me and taking a hold of my hand and saying lets go under the slide. So I was thinking in my head about what is about to take place but I quite couldn’t grasp what is happening.
So we get under the slide and she tells me close your eyes and when I closed them she kissed me on my lips. What I was thinking in my head was saying to myself was this was my first kiss and it happened just out of nowhere. Right after she kissed me we held hands all the way back until our classes lined back up to go back to each other class. I will always remember my first kiss; I am just looking back at it like I am surprised I got mine so young. So with getting my first kiss in the second grade pretty much every girlfriend after that until pecking was leading up to my first make out. So it all started with I was in a relationship in the sixth grade

Logic cannot prove the existence of God

There are those that would agree with this statement, such as atheists like Hume who would argued that existence can’t be proved using reason as we need both observation and empirical evidence to prove God’s true existence. Others argue that faith doesn’t need logic in order to prove the existence of God, through believing in his existence he exists, alongside knowledge from revelation in the Bible. Kant argues that existence is not a predicate of God, it adds nothing to our knowledge of God, and so we cannot just assume that he exists. It is impossible to compare God to a perfect island, just because he appears to perfect does not mean we can assume he exists; applying logic to a being doesn’t bring it into existence. Others would argue that God’s existence is logically necessary. It could be argued that philosophers like Plato use logic and reason to prove God’s existence for example in the allegory of the cave. Anselm would have disagreed with this statement completely as he clearly thought that God could be proved by logic and reason alone. His ontological argument relies upon using logic as he deducted, he argues that God is, ‘than that which nothing greater can be conceived’ thereby if there is nothing greater than the most Supreme Being conceivable, the most Supreme Being must exist. Thus his entire argument is based upon the foundation of logic in order to prove God’s existence. Similarly Descartes would have also disagreed with this statement as he felt it was as logically necessary for God to exist in the same way that it was logically necessary for triangles to have three sides and three angles. Those who accept Descartes idea that God is a ‘supremely perfect being’ leads to accepting the logical conclusion that God must exist. In conclusion it appears that logic cannot prove the existence of God, as just because we can identify something as having the capabilities to exist doesn’t mean it exist. Similarly logic doesn’t prove existence as…

Discussion 2 week one

The first term I chose is Genre, used to identify the different categories of literature. There really is not an example of Genre in our readings as they are from all different categories. I did find it interesting that they break up into three main categories; prose, poetry and drama and then they are broken into more specific categories. It reminds me of all of the different genres we all have on our Ipods or other devices. Most of the time music can fit into multiple categories and surprises you when they are found under a category that you would not place them. I am looking forward to learning the different literature genres and seeing how certain works will fall into multiple areas.
The second term I chose Tone, this is the speakers attitude toward the reader or the subject. Tone is usually easy to detect when the story is written from the point of view of one of the characters in the story. The example I will use is the tone set up in the A&P story from Chapter one. The clerks tone regarding his life in the small town is somewhat bitter, along with some humor. I enjoyed this story the most because it really gave you a good idea on his attitude and the way he saw himself and others.
The next term will be Imagery, the distinct representation of something that can be experienced and understood through the senses. Imagery to me is one of the most important things a writer must do. If you cannot feel the emotions or shape your imagination around the scene it is very difficult to understand or enjoy the writing. A good example of imagery comes from the reading by Alice Walker, The Welcome Table. The author does an excellent job of describing and setting up the initial scene before going into the main story. The first three paragraphs are used to describe the elderly woman, giving the reader a clear picture of not only how she looked but also of the time period it was set in.
My last term is metaphor, or a figure of speech in which an implied…
